Permitting

Barker Building Sign

Planning entitlement for a painted wall sign on the historic Barker Building in DTLA, requiring a specific plan check to demonstrate compliance with preservation standards for historic structures.

The Situation

The Barker Building, located at 722 S Broadway in Los Angeles, sits within a historically designated area along the Broadway corridor. Any new signage on the building therefore requires Planning Department review under a specific plan check process, with particular scrutiny on preserving the historic fabric of the structure.

What We Did

We prepared the entitlement package addressing the project's compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, focused on demonstrating that the sign is fully reversible and causes no permanent alteration to the historic building.

The Outcome

The permit application is currently in process with the City of Los Angeles Planning Department. The proposal aligns with precedent where Planning staff have supported similar projects allowing signage to be removed without damage to the historic building, and preserves the primary Broadway facade — including its ornamentation and windows — fully untouched.
